Default To gain muscle mass

I'm a freshman college basketball player and I want to gain muscle mass and I know that means weight which is fine but i dont want to gain any fat at all. I have a strict conditioning rutine and im 5'7'' 150 lb point guard so i know im small but i need to gain a lot of muscle mass and strength. I want to take some supplements obviously no steroids. Also any workout advice would help too.....Thanks everyone!

If you're only 5'7", I'd rather have the extreme speed and conditioning to get open for the 'J' than being bigger lol. Your basketball has a very high demand for calories as it is. What do you think your daily intake is?

Muscle could get in the way of your game depending on how you play. Adding power to your legs for jumping and sprinting, as well as having a solid upper body for driving or being able to take a hit better would make sense to me. But again, it depends on what you want to improve.

Yeah i have extreme quickness and im able to take a lot of hits and still finish. But i still feel I need to get stronger on my upper body with more mass to body up and be able to finish even better with people who are 6'9'' or 6'10'' so my max bench is at 185 approximately. I just maxed yesterday day and i had 195 up 90% of the way w/o help from a spotter. So I guess what im looking for is supplements and workouts that would help me gain mass and increase my strength, b/c coach wants my bench around like 250 in like 4 or 5months.....

5x5 program would be a good start. Creatine/beta-alanine will help with your strength gains.

If your coach wants that big of a jump in your bench press, just reference how good Kevin Durant is doing not being able to bench 185 LOL!

Seriously though, what is your diet looking like?

Look at a guard like Steve Nash. The guy plays soccer and is extremely quick, I wouldn't think that he was beastly strong. If you want strength a 5x5 or Max OT would be good. Basic supplements like a good multi-vitamin, protein, and creatine would be a good start if you aren't already taking them.

I'm not sure how a high bench does anything for your basketball game?

Unless the coach is equating overall strength to a bench number?

Scivation Xtend is a great supplement to start with IMO. It will provide stamina/energy for your workouts while helping you recover and build muscle.

I appreciate all the advice. Yeah I don't feel that my "bench" has much to do with my skills but its alright. Im thinking about going on a beta-alanine and creatine supplement regimen for 3 months with lifting and obviously my conditioning which is at least 2-3 miles a day then playing ball everyday so does that sound okay? Also, should I try and eat more while doing this or not?

The exact stuff I was going to use was Cytosport Muscle Milk Collegiate Powder, IntraXCell and CH Power Creatine 400gr so is that alright?

make sure you get a decent pct going for that creatine

I will echo the others and post up your diet. Diet in my mind is the make or break to any training goals

I work at sports authority, not that it matters or anything but I often overhear advice getting passed on from older generations to those of us in our prime. This just so happened to be something that pops up quite a bit. No offense or anything but I've once heard an old guy giving advice to his grandson who was basketball player. It went something to the effect of, "How strong do you have to be to throw a 9 pound ball full of air? All that muscle is gonna get in the way!"

I personally dont have an opinion on it because I'm still learning too but I Just thought it wouldnt hurt to share a story. hopefully it helps

Off hand I'd say you'd need an estimated 272.25 lb flat bench for starters.

There is no way a basketball weighs nine pounds.

"The National Basketball Association (NBA) allows only one official ball: The ball must be the official NBA game ball manufactured by Spalding. The ball is orange in color, 29.5 inches in circumference and weighs 22 ounces (size 7). It must also be inflated to between 7.5 and 8.5 pounds per square inch. Starting in the 2006 season, the NBA switched to a new ball from Spalding that had a synthetic surface and a modified rib pattern"

Thats what I thought, more like a pound or so. 9 pounds! Are you kidding me? There would be no half court shots coming even close, I know that.

That would be like throwing the bigger medicine balls you see in most gyms. I would hate just "shootin hoops" My right deltoid would be HUGE.
